Watercolour & Drawing Classes My next Watercolour class is due to start on Thursday evening, 9 May 2024 at Darwin Adult Short Courses. This will be a six week course looking at the Australian landscape with inspiration from great Australian landscape artists such as Namatjira and Heysen. I am also running a six week class in artists soft pastels on Tuesday evenings at DASC starting on 7 May. The flowering Swamp Bloodwoods made me feel it was time to revisit this wonderful, direct and vibrant medium.Watercolour & Drawing Classes

Treescapes 2021 Exhibition This exhibition at Darwin Visual Arts gallery included a series of 7 single works on paper which join up to form a continuous view from our back veranda. The gaps correspond to upright roof supports (well almost) I included some of our visiting birds in each of them. Drawing is for everyone, it is part of being human! But it does take some sustained effort (I will not call it 'work') and some guidance does help. In this 8 week class, we practise creating the illusion of space and distance with the basic marks and shapes: the line, the sphere, the cube, the cylinder and the helix. Understanding how to portray these basic shapes enables an artist to draw absolutely anything: from architecture to bees.
We do exercises using line, tone and texture; linear perspective, composition and using our imagination. Each week there will be: tutor demonstrations; visual presentations; reference books; and a still life or other arrangement to draw, with emphasis on the natural world.
We will do this while exploring a number of traditional drawing methods including graphite, charcoal and pen and ink.
